It Was A Three Dog Night - Nassau Coliseum's First Live Concert

 Good morning. Today, April 29, 1972, the brand new state of the art Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York hosted its first concert. Three Dog Night, the band who had more hits than any other group between 1969-1974 headlined the evening. A crowd of 16,500 saw the band perform their trademark hits including " Joy To The World" and "Mama Told Me Not To Come". I do not recall any awareness of this event but having just turned 12, my Mama would have told me not to go.

Finally, the Beatles once again made the news as Taylor Swift's latest double album " The Tortured Poets Department" reached number 1 in the UK and she passed the Beatles as fastest artist to 12 number one albums. But the Beatles did it in only 8 years.

"Remember, Walking In The Sand" and Mary Weiss, RIP, 75 of the Shangri-Las.

 Good morning. What I planned to write about will have to wait for another day as we remember the lead vocalist of the Shangri-Las, Mary Weiss, who hailed, like the other members of her group, from Cambria Heights, Queens, New York. Mary died on Friday, January 19 in Palm Springs, California, as reported by the Naples Daily News (USA Today). Her older sister Betty, ironically the first member of the group to leave the band after their hit Leader of the Pack reached number one, is the sole survivor at age 77. The Wanser twins, Mary Ann and Marge, born in Oceanside, Long Island, NY, died in 1972 and 1996 respectively.  In 1964, after their first hit, Remember Walking In The Sand reached number 5 on the charts, with a 16 year old Billy Joel from Hicksville, Long Island, NY on piano*, the Shangri-Las next release Leader of the Pack rose to number 1. The Airplane lands non-stop from Yasgur's Farm, White Lake, NY to the runway at the Dick Cavett Show

 Good morning. I belong to a Jefferson Airplane group on Facebook and its administrator posted a video clip of what appears to be the Airplanes' post-Woodstock appearance on the Dick Cavett Show, accompanied by the late David Crosby on tambourine and the late Nicky Hopkins on keyboard. The band impressed me with how tight they were and how much Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen were in command on that stage. Unlike an appearance a couple of years before that on American Bandstand, they appeared in living color and performed live. According to Jorma, Dick exercised full control on his guests' appearances and insisted on them air-guitaring and lip-syncing to the performance.
